執行控制

執行控制，也稱為認知控制或執行功能，指的是廣泛的高階認知能力，對於人類的最佳表現至關重要（Diamond，2013; Zelazo，2020）。這些功能包括但不限於（1）工作記憶：在腦中積極維持、操作、更新和監控臨時信息的能力；（2）抑制控制：抑制不恰當的主導反應和過濾環境干擾的能力；
（3）轉換：靈活改變思維和行為以適應環境需求的能力；以及（4）情緒控制，即調節或控制自己情緒反應的能力（Friedman＆Miyake，2017; Roth等，2013）。對兒童和青少年進行長期追蹤的縱向研究表明，早期較高水平的執行控制可以顯著預測未來不同的成果，包括更好的學術表現（Spiegel等，2021）和更少的顯化行為問題（Yang等，2022）。對中年和老年人群進行長期追蹤的研究還表明，較高水平的執行控制，由其是認知靈活性，可以預測未來有更好的日常生活能力（Tomaszewski Farias等，2009）和在老年時較低的失智症風險（Payton等，2022）。

由於執行控制在不同發展階段的各個領域都唯之重要，我們的團隊致力於以下四個相關範疇進行高質量的行為和腦研究：

1. 執行控制的機制

執行控制和認知控制難以定義，存在各種概念框架。心理學家和神經科學家認為，執行控制由多個重疊但不同的組成部分（Friedman＆Miyake，2017），並且對執行控制在動機和情緒顯著性存在或不存在時的表現區分冷執行控制和熱執行控制（Zelazo，2020）。其他學者則強調認知控制的時間動態，區分了於需求出現前或需求出現後所激活的控制過程（即主動控制模式與反應控制模式；Braver，2012），或者專注於維持目標和控制中的穩定性與靈活性之間的權衡（Mayr＆Grätz，2024）。我們的團隊目前正在進行研究，以整合這些觀點，解決難題，並揭示不同控制過程的神經生物學機制。

2. 執行控制的發展

執行控制在整個人生的週期中都會改變。與其他認知功能（如感知）相比，大多數執行控制於兒童和青少年時期持續發展，並在約25歲左右達到頂峰表現。然而，它們在成年後很容易隨著年齡的增長而衰退。由於執行控制的多面性，我們的團隊積極進行研究，以（1）了解不同執行控制在不同年齡段之間的差異；（2）識別可能對年齡差異造成重大影響的因素；以及（3）了解控制表現隨時間推移變化背後的神經生物學機制。這些知識最終可能有助於制定一份「成長圖」，有助評估不同發展階段的執行控制技巧。

3. 執行控制與心理健康

研究一致發現了執行控制障礙與多種心理健康疾病有關，包括自閉症譜系以及情緒和焦慮障礙。因此，研究員越來越傾向於採用一種跨診斷的方法來理解執行控制與心理健康或精神病理學。儘管做出了巨大努力，但仍存在一些未解決的問題，包括（1）是否所有執行控制均同樣地受不同的心理疾病影響；（2）表現出更多心理病理症狀但仍不符合診斷標準（即亞臨床症狀）的人士是否也缺乏執行控制；以及（3）可能影響患有心理健康問題的人士執行控制的因素。我們的團隊積極進行行為和神經科學研究，以解決這些知識上的缺漏，讓我們可以開發更有效的神經和非神經科學方法，加強受心理健康影響的人士的執行控制能力。

執行控制在生活的各個領域中都至關重要。例如，它能預測兒童和青少年未來的學術表現（Spiegel等，2021）和心理健康（Yang等，2022），中年和老年人的日常生活能力（Tomaszewski Farias等，2009）, 以及預防癡呆症（Payton等，2022）。此外，在人口層面上，執行控制缺失的情況普遍存在於不同的心理健康問題，亦可能構成核心臨床症狀（例如，自閉症譜系障礙中的限制性和刻板行為）。儘管在個人和人群之間存在差異，目前我們已知大腦具有因經驗而改變和適應的能力。因此，我們的實驗室正在積極研發新穎的執行控制訓練方法，當中涉及人工智慧的應用和多模式的整合，包括神經反饋訓練和家用電腦訓練。我們的團隊目前正在評估這些訓練計劃對增強（自閉症）兒童和青少年，以及具有情緒或焦慮症狀的中年和老年人的執行控制的功效。
