A Hybird EEG-fNIRS Neurofeedback Application for Brain Training for Autistic Children
Neurofeedback Training
This pilot study examined the efficacy of a 12-session neurofeedback training program, utilizing our newly developed EEG–fNIRS software designed to enhance brain health and functioning in autistic children. The program employs electroencephalography (EEG) alone, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) alone, or a combination of both to capture different aspects of brain activity. We hope that this training will provide significant benefits to the cognitive function, emotion regulation, and social functioning of autistic individuals, which comprises 1 to 3% of the world’s population

fNIRS
Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is an optical brain monitoring technique which uses near-infrared spectroscopy for the purpose of functional neuroimaging. Using fNIRS, brain activity is measured by using near-infrared light to estimate cortical hemodynamic activity which occur in response to neural activity. Alongside EEG, fNIRS is one of the most common non-invasive neuroimaging techniques which can be used in portable contexts. The signal is often compared with the BOLD signal measured by fMRI and is capable of measuring changes both in oxy- and deoxyhemoglobin concentration, but can only measure from regions near the cortical surface. fNIRS may also be referred to as Optical Topography (OT) and is sometimes referred to simply as NIRS.

Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children -
Fourth Edition (Hong Kong) WISC-IV (HK)
The Wechsler Intelligence Scale is a standardized test, wherein the obtained scores are statistically compared with the average intelligence of individuals of the same age group in Hong Kong. It is constructed from various subtests and the version used in 2020 was the fourth edition. Intelligence is greatly influenced or constructed by culture, therefore, it is particularly important to utilize an assessment that serves as a reference group for the Hong Kong population.
